Electoral Reform Will Be the First Act of a Caron Government
Ottawa, June 6, 2017 - New Democrat MP and Leadership candidate, Guy Caron (Rimouski-Neigette-Témiscouata-Les Basques) today announced that the first legislative move by his government will be to put forward a comprehensive electoral reform plan.
"Justin Trudeau blithely lied to Canadians and progressives by promising that 2015 would be the last election fought under the current voting system. In an act of unprecedented cynicism, they simply turned their backs on that promise. My government would change our electoral system so that each vote really counts." stated Mr. Caron.
Guy Caron's plan has four elements:
Once elected to form government, electoral reform will be a firm commitment by the NDP in the next election.
Once elected, the first bill introduced in the House by the NDP will change our voting system by establishing a Mixed-Member Proportional system with regional lists.
After two electoral cycles under the new system, a referendum will be held so that Canadians can weigh in on, and ratify the new voting system.
In case of a minority government following the 2019 general election, electoral reform will be a prerequisite for any potential alliance.
"The Liberals were only able to garner 39% of the popular vote, yet they reign over us as monarchs. Every day, they use their false majority to pass legislation without so much as consulting the opposition. This behavior - regardless of the party - must stop." added Caron.
