Guy Caron Announces Candidacy for NDP Leadership

His first commitment: a basic income for all Canadians

Gatineau, February 27, 2017 — Today, MP Guy Caron (Rimouski-Neigette-Témiscouata-Les Basques) officially joined the race for the leadership of the New Democratic Party. Mr. Caron presented the first measure of his progressive and sustainable economic plan: a proposal to establish a basic income to ensure all Canadians are able to meet their essential needs.

"Economic inequality and climate change are the major challenges of our generation. For the first time in our history, our children and grandchildren will face a tougher economic reality than that of their parents. It is our duty to propose a bold and credible plan to transform an economic system that leaves most Canadians behind. Presenting a meaningful plan that leads to change will be the key challenge of this leadership race, and that’s just what I intend to do as I share my vision with Canadians," explains Caron.

In 2015, Guy Caron was re-elected to the House of Commons for a second term. A progressive economist by trade, he has served as the NDP's critic for Finance, Industry and Natural Resources. Before his election as an MP, Caron spent 15 years studying economic and public policies in various civil society organizations.

"Our current situation is such that inequality continues to grow. Too many communities are seeing well-paid jobs being relocated elsewhere, older workers are at the mercy of market forces, families are more indebted than ever, and we have little to offer our young people other than a precarious future. The Liberal and Conservative status quo leads to a dead end. It is high time to change course," insists Caron.

Under the slogan, "Let’s Build a Progressive and Sustainable Economy", Caron's leadership campaign is a response to the economic angst experienced by so many Canadians.

A native of Rimouski, Guy Caron grew up in a middle class family. He is the oldest brother of three children and his parents were primary and secondary school teachers. Guy Caron has been married for 11 years to Valerie, and he is the proud father of Dominic (8) and Édith (5).
